Our Rotarian of the Week is a distinguished citizen of Wyoming. She has had a remarkable career in the private and public sectors, as well as in service to Rotary and the Cheyenne community. She grew up in Big Piney, Wyoming, where her father was a ranch manager and game warden, and her mother was the High School Librarian. She graduated from Big Piney High School in 1966 in a class of 38, several of whom remain close friends. Always industrious, she worked during school on the ranch and in a men’s clothing store.
She graduated from Utah State University. She has pursued additional education as a graduate of the Land Title Institute and a management program for title insurance executives. She began her career in the title insurance industry in Kemmerer, WY, where she served as President and CEO of the Rocky Mountain Title Insurance Agency of Lincoln County. In 1984 Cindy Pomeroy was recruited to Cheyenne to be CEO of First American Title of Laramie County. Over a 20-year career she grew the agency to 36 employees and an 80% market share. She also was instrumental in increasing First American Title’s statewide business. Cindy served on, and chaired, many boards and commissions, including the Chamber, LEADS, the Botanic Gardens, and LCCC Foundation. The recipient of many awards and recognitions, she was the Cheyenne Realtors’ Business Person of the Year in 1990 and the Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the year in 1992.
In 2003 newly elected Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal asked her to bring her management and executive talents to the public sector by serving as the Director of the Department of Employment. It was an agency of over 330 employees with functions critical to the Wyoming economy such as Worker’s Compensation, Labor Standards, and OSHA. She worked as the Governor’s liaison to the Legislature and served as a policy advisor until 2010. In 2010 Cindy opened her consulting and lobbying business where she represented the title insurance industry, property and casualty and healthcare companies. She retired in 2015 but continues a very active community life. She is currently the President of the AD Chapter of PEO.
Cindy has been a Rotarian for 34 years. She was the fourth woman admitted to the Club. Fred Baggs was relentless in his encouragement of Cindy to serve as President, which she did from 2001 - 2002. She remembers it as a demanding job, the Club did not have the strong committee structure that it does now, so the President did a great share of the work. But she thoroughly enjoyed her service. She was instrumental in raising the funds for the Rotary Plaza in Lions Park. Cindy continues to serve on the Rotary Foundation Board and the LCCC Foundation Board, in addition to belonging to two book clubs and playing mahjong regularly.
Cindy has a son and daughter and four grandchildren. One of her grandsons is headed to Princeton on a lacrosse scholarship. Cindy is married to Bill, and he has children and grandkids.
Please stand to recognize our Rotarian of the Week – Cindy Pomeroy.
