Cheyenne's Close Call

In 1867, the new Hell on Wheels community of Cheyenne was being built in expectation of the arrival of the world's first transcontinental railroad.  It was a wild place consisting of tents, knock-down buildings and muddy pathways.  Many people, however, foresaw the potential for great opportunity and wealth with the arrival of the railroad and were willing to take great risks to attain their goals.  Some succeeded, some failed.  Some, upon failing, sought revenge.  Failing to get rich quick, Silas Seymour, a friend of Union Pacific Railroad President Thomas Durant, sought to destroy the new community in a fit of retribution.  He would have succeeded had not a concerted effort by passionate and dedicated people fought to keep Cheyenne alive.  Their efforts accomplished something far greater than anyone had foreseen and would change the American West forever.
