Our very special Rotarian of the week grew up in Newcastle Wyoming. I’d like to first share a funny story about our Rotarian’s birth. This Rotarian’s father was in a weekly poker game with other prominent members of the community. The town doctor lost all his money and begged our Rotarian’s father to have one more chance to play. The doctor said that if he lost, he would deliver the expected baby for free of charge. The doctor lost, the father won, so our special Rotarian was technically won in a poker game!
This Rotarian attended Newcastle High school, home of the Dogies graduating with 67 in her class. It should be noted that a Dogie is a motherless calf, not a strange dog. This Rotarian went on to graduate from the University of Wyoming with a BA in English and a Juris Doctorate.
This Rotarian has one son and one dog.
Our Rotarian’s first job was folding sheets for a small hotel in Newcastle, earning $1.25 an hour.
Our Rotarian’s most memorable Rotary Experience was serving as chairman of a Rotary formal dance with a theme of “Night in Casablanca.” The dinner featured authentic Moroccan food and beautiful scantily clad belly dancers who performed with bowls of fire on their heads.
Mary Guthrie was sponsored by Judge Alan Johnson to join our Rotary club in 1996 and loves Rotary because we provide great service locally and internationally while having fun and making great friendships.
Serving on our Board of Directors, Read to Me, Program Presenter, and Picnic co-chair for years with Judy Weickum, Mary Guthrie has been an invaluable member of our club.
Breaking down many barriers throughout her life, Mary has been an English High school teacher, a Law Clerk for a Federal Judge, a Deputy Wyoming Attorney General, the first female City Attorney, the Executive Director of the Wyoming State Bar and Outstanding Adjunct Instructor at LCCC.
Her favorite meal will forever be any gourmet dinner that was prepared by Chef Marshall.
Her hobbies include several book and discussion groups, City and LCCC bands, yoga, and walking.
Please help me honor this winner of the Wyoming Business Journal’s Woman of Influence Lifetime Achievement Award, and our good friend, Mary Guthrie.
