Beth VanDeWege Earns Rotary District 5440 Service Above Self Award

Beth VanDeWege is a Rotarian who exemplifies service above self.  She has been actively involved in youth exchange programs and has been a generous donor since joining Rotary in 2005.  She began serving on the District Youth Exchange Committee when she joined Rotary.  In that time, she has played a role in hundreds of exchanges, promoting world peace and international goodwill in dozens of countries.  For the last three years, Beth has chaired the District Youth Exchange Committee and has served in a variety of other roles including serving as Country Coordinator for Spanish-speaking countries; and the Outbound Student Coordinator-- helping organize outbound student selection and training.

In her role as District Youth Exchange Chair, Beth leads and organizes the committee, handles the administrative issues, and tackles the myriad situations that arise.  When a student has a problem, she deals directly with the student, host club, host family and, if necessary, natural parents to resolve the issue.  She is patiently compassionate, but firm when she needs to be.  Beth has led the committee through the extra challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the health & safety of each of the exchange students and their host families.  The amount of time required to chair this committee is substantial.  Nearly every day she does some work for Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE).  Many days she spends several hours and some months she provides 60 or more hours of service to RYE.

Beth has worked hard to improve the youth exchange committee throughout her service.  She has mentored and brought in new committee members to maintain continuity and engage other Rotarians.  Beth has invested her time and money attending Rotary Youth Exchange Officer conferences throughout North America and in Europe, bringing home best practices and sharing them to the benefit of the committee and ultimately, exchange students and their families.

Beth has also actively supported the RYE program for the Rotary Club of Cheyenne.  In addition to serving as an emergency host family in Cheyenne, she and her husband, Pat, have hosted eight students in their home.  Beth co-chaired the Club’s youth exchange committee for almost a decade and was recognized as Quiet Rotarian of the Year by our club.

In addition to her passion for youth exchange, Beth has been a generous donor to Rotary causes.  She is a Paul Harris Fellow plus eight, a Paul Harris Society member (those who give $1,000 or more annually to the Annual Fund of The Rotary Foundation), and a Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation (those who have given $10,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation).  Beyond her contributions to Rotary International, she has donated to the Cheyenne Rotary Club Foundation and is recognized as an Auburn Dowdy Fellow and James Foreman Fellow for her contributions.

Beth VanDeWege is an outstanding Rotarian.  She is thoughtful, determined, and cares deeply about the goals of Rotary and the youth exchange program.  Beth is a role model of service above self; and will receive the District 5440 “Service Above Self Award” at the District Conference on June 13.  Please join us to congratulate Beth!
Congratulations to Our  Guatemala Literacy Project  Fellowship Recipients

The Rotary Club of Cheyenne World Community Service Committee (WCS) has pledged $2000 to support the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) and is now eligible to select up to 2 Rotarians to be recognized a Guatemala Literacy Fellow, one for each $1000 that was contributed to the GLP.  This recognition program is similar to the Paul Harris Fellow program, recognizes individuals who have provided assistance in the endeavor to bring the gift of literacy to children.

We are proud to announce that this recognition have been awarded to Carly Rando and Mary McIlvaine in honor of her husband, George.  Congratulations to you both!

Meeting Survey Request
July 1 brings to Rotary a new year – traditionally a time to reflect on the past year and celebrate the promise of the future.  With the uncertainties created by a pandemic, Rotary Club of Cheyenne is considering ways to continue our traditions in responsible ways.

Many of you have asked what our Rotary Club plans to do with meetings, and all we can tell you for sure is that we will be flexible, socially responsible, and will try to do what best protects our club members.  We will continue to meet virtually via Zoom meetings through June.  Going forward for the next year, to honor and include all members, we hope to offer options for in-person and virtual attendance simultaneously, when possible as the situation unfolds in the state and county.  We understand that attendance at an in-person gathering must be a personal decision by each of you, now and throughout the coming months.

Before the Club finalizes any decision or arrangements to meet in person, we need to know whether you support meeting in person, starting July 1 and for meetings over the next several months.  President Robin sent this link out earlier this week, if you haven't yet filled out the survey, please do so. Your input is important as to how we meet will inform our decisions about whether to meet in person and what that could mean for our club dues.  The survey is brief and should take just a couple of minutes of your time.  Just click --> Input for Rotary In-Person Meetings

We do plan to hold our traditional installation of new directors and officers in person at noon on Wednesday, July 1, outside on the patio at Little America, followed by food and fellowship.   This meeting would follow current social distancing guidelines for restaurants, with no more than 6 people at a table, plated food service, and a request that attendees wear face coverings and maintain social distancing as we gather.   We may or may not be able to connect members to this outdoor meeting through Zoom.   Members and guests will be required to RSVP for this meeting through the survey link above.

We appreciate your input, and look forward to seeing you!
