Volunteer Surge Project
In the past month, we have seen the COVID-19 pandemic push our healthcare system around the country to its limits. What if there was a way to help our healthcare workers, from the safety of our homes, to make a real difference in fighting this virus?

In the last four weeks, a nonprofit founded by Rotary members, The Global Impact Group, has been instrumental in an effort to roll out a citizen volunteer opportunity called Volunteer Surge. This Group was co-founded by Rotary members in Districts 5160 and 6900, and clubs throughout the country are joining in this effort.

Combining the power of Rotary, using the technology and collaboration available today, this project has the support and the vision to for significant social impact.  I urge you to click HERE to go onto the TGIG website and learn more. You’ll see that this is an immediate opportunity for us to help our communities, as well as the nation, in the fight against COVID-19!

Volunteering will help healthcare workers save lives! Please check out the TGIG.org website and look at their FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). This opportunity to serve is not limited to Rotary Members!  We encourage you to find out more, sign up if you’re interested in joining the fight against COVID-19, and most importantly to please share this opportunity with friends and family.
Nominate a Fellow Rotarian for the Guatemala Literacy Project  Fellowship!

The Rotary Club of Cheyenne World Community Service Committee (WCS) has pledged $2000 to support the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) and is now eligible to select up to 2 Rotarians to be recognized a Guatemala Literacy Fellow, one for each $1000 that was contributed to the GLP.  This recognition program is similar to the Paul Harris Fellow program, recognizes individuals who have provided assistance in the endeavor to bring the gift of literacy to children.  We would like to welcome and encourage all club members to join in this opportunity to honor fellow Rotarians by nominating them to be considered for this recognition.  Candidates do not have to have contributed specifically to the GLP and need only to have volunteered in the area of literacy.

To submit a nomination, please complete the form found on our webpage, cheyennerotary.org under the World Community Service link.  Email to Jera Likely, jeraschlotthauer@gmail.com by Friday, May 1, 2020.  Direct any questions you might have to Jera as well.

To learn more about the project, please visit the Guatemala Literacy Project website: https://www.guatemalaliteracy.org/

Welcome to the Age of Plastic

Author Susan Freinkel, featured in the April 2020 issue of The Rotarian "Plastics: A Toxic Love Story" will join us as we discuss our love of plastics.

A century ago almost nothing was made of plastic, Today it’s in almost everything we touch and use: our clothing, cars, toys, computers, medical equipment, packaging. Thanks to our love affair with plastic, it’s now also in places it shouldn’t be — like our bodies and the world’s oceans.  Join us  for a conversation about the rise of plastic and what that has meant for our lives, our health and the health of the planet.

Susan is a San Francisco based writer. She is the author of Plastic: A Toxic Love Story, ttp://rotarianmagazine-us.rotary.org/rotarian/april_2020/MobilePagedArticle.action?articleId=1569727#articleId1569727 and American Chestnut: The Life, Death and Rebirth of a Perfect Tree. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Smithsonian, Discover, OnEarth, Reader’s Digest, Health, and other national publications.

And if you want more information about the rise of plastic in our world, there is a free screening of Story of Plastic on April 24.
