Larry Wolfe read the following eulogy for Joel Wiens:
Today we remember and honor our fellow Rotarian, Joel Wiens, who passed away on March 8, 2026, at the age of 96.
Joel had a remarkable life, one defined by hard work, resilience, and a deep commitment to both his profession and his community. He was born the day after the stock market crash that ushered in the Great Depression. Joel often observed that those early years shaped the determination and entrepreneurial spirit that carried him through life.
After graduating from Phillips University, he began his career as a teacher and coach, while also running wheat harvest crews in Nebraska. In 1963, he purchased a bank in Kimball, Nebraska, launching a long and successful career in banking and business. Over the years, his ventures included FirsTier Bank, First Interstate Inns, and restaurants such as The Beef and Brunch.
But beyond his business accomplishments, Joel truly embodied Rotary’s ideal of “Service Above Self.” He gave generously of his time and leadership, serving on the boards of George Risk Industries, Phillips University, and the foundations of the University of Wyoming and the University of Nebraska. He was also a devoted fan of the football teams of both schools.
Joel never lost his connection to the land. He raised Polled Hereford cattle, including Mr. Beef, a grand champion bull, and continued to check on his wheat fields and Black Angus cattle well into his later years.
Joel was a familiar presence at Rotary. Many of us will remember him attending meetings in his trademark cowboy hat, with his beloved wife, Elena. His energy, consistency, and quiet dedication set an example for all of us.
Joel’s faith guided his life. He lived by the belief: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” And that is exactly how he lived, fully, faithfully, and with purpose.
