This proud Hornet graduated from Pine Bluffs High School in a class of 33. A 5th generation resident of the town, whose grandfather was the sheriff and their mom’s generation was the last to farm potatoes in the area. This aspiring journalist first worked at the Pine Bluffs Post tracking subscriptions and doing other tasks for minimum wage (maybe $3 or $4/hour) and also worked weekends in the summer as a lifeguard. After attending the University of Wyoming for one year, our Rotarian of the Week then decided to marry their high school sweetheart, moved to Cheyenne and has lived here ever since. This Rotarian’s career in banking began in 1979 and while working there they were a bit envious of the fellow bankers such as Auburn Dowdy that attended this thing called Rotary because at that time it was not appropriate for a person in an entry position to be a member. Eventually, in 2004 while working at the Hitching Post, the soon-to-be Rotarian was invited to attend a meeting by Chuck Bohlen and encouraged to join by Paul Smith. Feeling humbled by finally getting to join, Rotary turned out to be exactly as imagined!! The Rotarian of the Week says that not only does the organization do great things, but the programs provide something to learn personally each week. The most memorable experience was working on a big 100 yr. anniversary party for the Rotary Club of Cheyenne where their nephew and his wife (who were past Rotary presidents in Worland) attended. Sharing the Rotary experience with family only makes it better!! This Rotarian believes most strongly in the 2nd part of the 4-Way Test, “Is it fair to all concerned?” and has used this as the basis for how her resume reflects what she has done and also how she runs her business. She has served on the Rotary Board, done interviews for RYLA, and helps with many things around Rotaract in the community. She is still working part time in real estate (for her son) and serves on the Hospital Foundation Board and the new board for Laramie County Senior Services. Julie Malm has two grown children who both live in Cheyenne, and her proudest accomplishment is her marriage - one that no one thought would last. Their shared faith got them through everything. The love of her life passed away shortly after their 40th Wedding Anniversary. Julie says that with the help of the strength and friendship from her “tribes” and fellow Rotarians, she has been able to get through the last few difficult years. Her favorite meal is cheese and crackers and wine. More specifically ANY cheese, Wheat Thins, and Italian wines. In her spare time she likes to travel (bucket list trip in the future is a fall tour of the New England states), and read-murder/mystery/romances. Julie is so thankful that she didn’t grow up in Albin like Ron Rabou!!! |
